Senate Passes Farry Bill to Create Christopher Jones Memorial Highway

The state Senate has unanimously approved House Bill 589, legislation sponsored by Rep. Frank Farry (R-Bucks) to designate U.S. Route 1 in Bucks County as the Detective Christopher Jones Memorial Highway.

On Jan. 29, 2009, Jones, a 10-year veteran with the Middletown Township Police Department, was struck and killed while conducting a traffic stop on Route 1 near the I-95 interchange.  As Jones was walking to his patrol car, two cars collided and hit his vehicle, which then struck him. Jones was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.  He left behind a wife and three children.

“This legislation is a small gesture to tell Chris’ family, friends, and co-workers that we are grateful for his public service and their sacrifice for our community,” Farry said.  “I am pleased the Senate has passed this bill and I look forward to the governor signing it.”

House Bill 589 is the second piece of Farry legislation to pass the Senate in two days.  Yesterday, the Senate passed House Bill 797, Farry’s legislation which designates cancer as an occupational disease for firefighters.

Both bills are now awaiting the governor’s signature.
