Governor Signs Two Farry Bills Into Law

HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett has signed two bills introduced by Rep. Frank Farry (R-Bucks) into law.

House Bill 797, designates cancer as an occupational disease for firefighters.

“Pennsylvania’s volunteer and career firefighters sacrifice a great deal to protect our lives and property. Firefighters who develop the horrible disease of cancer as a result of their service deserve support and proper protection,” Farry said.  “This new law guarantees they will receive it.”

Under the new law, Act 46 of 2011, firefighters can receive workers’ compensation if they develop cancer and can establish direct exposure to certain carcinogens at fire or hazmat incidents.  To be eligible for workers’ compensation, the firefighter would have to have participated in continuous firefighting duty for four or more years and have successfully passed a cancer-free physical exam prior to asserting the claim or engaging in firefighting duties. Legislators have attempted to provide cancer protection for firefighters for 25 years.

Act 45 of 2011, which Farry introduced as House Bill 589, designates U.S. Route 1 in Bucks County as the Detective Christopher Jones Memorial Highway.

On Jan. 29, 2009, Jones, a 10-year veteran with the Middletown Township Police Department, was struck and killed while conducting a traffic stop on Route 1, near the I-95 interchange.  As Jones was walking to his patrol car, two cars collided and hit his vehicle, which then struck him. Jones was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.  He left behind a wife and three children.

“By designating this highway in Chris Jones’ honor, we are helping to keep alive the memory of a dedicated public servant,” said Farry.  “This is a small gesture to his family to demonstrate that we are grateful for his service and sacrifice for our community.”
