Hurricane Postpones Corbett Event Honoring Firefighters

Action emphasizes value of firefighters in emergencies

Gov. Tom Corbett and Rep. Frank Farry (R-Bucks) have postponed a scheduled bill signing on Monday in Bucks County that was to have been attended by hundreds of firefighters statewide.

The ceremonial bill signing for Farry’s legislation recognizing cancer as an occupational hazard of firefighters, is being rescheduled to ensure that firefighters and other emergency personnel are able to remain in their communities and respond to any storm-related emergencies as a result of Hurricane Irene.

“As a firefighter for more than 20 years, I wholeheartedly share the governor’s concern and commitment to public safety,” said Farry.  “Hundreds of firefighters from all over the state were expected to attend Monday’s bill signing in Langhorne.  In light of the high winds and heavy rain expected from the storm, it is necessary to postpone the event to ensure that we have all hands on deck to handle all emergencies.

“This is predicted to be the worst storm to hit our area in recent memory,” said Farry.  “The governor is right to focus his attention on the potential impact of this storm and to be prepared to respond accordingly.  Likewise, those firefighters whom he was poised to honor will be able to do the same.”

Farry’s bill will enable firefighters to receive workers’ compensation benefits if they develop cancer and can specifically link the cause to direct exposure to carcinogens on the job.  No new date has been set for the bill signing.
