Corbett to Sign Farry Bill Designating Cancer as Occupational Disease for Firefighters
1/24/2012
LANGHORNE —Rep. Frank Farry (R-Bucks) will welcome Gov. Tom Corbett for a ceremonial bill signing of Farry’s House Bill 797, which designates cancer as an occupational disease for firefighters meeting certain conditions, on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company’s North Station.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend the bill signing.

“I am pleased that we can finally offer this much-needed protection to our career and volunteer firefighters,” said Farry, who also serves as chief of the Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company. “I am looking forward to meeting with Governor Corbett and thanking him in person for supporting my initiative.”

Under House Bill 797, now known as Act 46 of 2011, firefighters can receive workers’ compensation if they develop cancer and can establish direct exposure to certain carcinogens at fire or hazmat incidents. To be eligible for workers’ compensation, the firefighter would have to have participated in continuous firefighting duty for four or more years and have successfully passed a cancer-free physical exam prior to asserting the claim or engaging in firefighting duties. Legislators have attempted to provide cancer protection for firefighters for 25 years.

“Pennsylvania’s volunteer and career firefighters sacrifice a great deal to protect our lives and property. Firefighters who develop cancer as a result of their service deserve support and proper protection,” Farry said. “This new law guarantees they will receive it.”

The Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company North Station is located at 1741 Langhorne-Yardley Road in Langhorne. Public parking for the event will be available at the Core Creek Park entrance on Woodbourne Road, across from Maple Point Middle School.

Anyone interested in attending the event can obtain more information, including a map of the available parking, by contacting Farry’s Langhorne office at (215) 752-6750, or by visiting Farry’s website at RepFarry.com, and clicking on “House Bill 797 Bill Signing.”
